What Does an Air Traffic Controller Do?

Every minute, every hour, every day, there are men and women working to ensure the safety and efficiency of our national airspace system.

This elite group of more than 14,000 FAA air traffic control specialists provide a vital public service to guide pilots, their planes and 2.7 million daily passengers from taxi to takeoff, through the air and back safely on the ground.

What they do:

  • Control air traffic on and within vicinity of airport, and movement of air traffic between altitude sectors and control centers, according to established procedures and policies.
  • Authorize, regulate, and control commercial airline flights according to government or company regulations to expedite and ensure flight safety.

This Is What It Takes to Be an Air Traffic Controller

On the job, air traffic controllers:

  • Inform pilots about nearby planes or potentially hazardous conditions, such as weather, speed and direction of wind, or visibility problems.
  • Issue landing and take-off authorizations or instructions.
  • Alert airport personnel when there is any kind of aircraft emergency
  • Use computers, radar or visual references to monitor and direct the flow of aircraft in the sky and ground traffic at the airport
  • Control ground traffic at airports, including baggage vehicles and maintenance employees

While not an absolute requirement, aspiring air traffic controllers can typically benefit from an associate or bachelor’s degree from an Air Traffic Collegiate Training Initiative (AT-CTI) program. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree, three years of progressively responsible work experience or a combination of the two may also be considered. However, because these jobs tend to be highly competitive, a two- or four-year degree from an (AT-CTI) school will prepare you for a career in air traffic control and earn you priority consideration.

The classes that candidates take in these programs are focused on subjects fundamental to aviation. Students study airspace, aviation, weather, reading charts, federal regulations, clearances and other similar topics. 36 schools across the country are approved through AT-CTI to offer associate, bachelor’s and master’s degree programs for aspiring air traffic controllers.

Educator Resources and Professional Learning

In support of K-5 science teaching and learning, a leadership team of representatives from the Michigan Science Education Leadership Association (MSELA) and Michigan Elementary and Middle School Principals Association (MEMSPA), in partnership with the CREATE for STEM Institute at Michigan State University (MSU), will bring together state and national science leaders to the campus of MSU on May 29, 2024 to discuss a shared research-based vision for teaching and learning of science in the elementary grades. We hope this will result in recommendations and next steps for achieving this vision so that all children in the state of Michigan can experience the joy of learning science. Educational leadership teams will be invited to attend the event including ISD and district curriculum directors, instructional coaches, principals, teacher leaders, and other local district leadership. This is a no-cost event.

Volunteer Opportunities

The KickStart to Career program has a volunteer opportunity for you! We are busy planning our KickStart Deposit Days, coming up on April 18, 24, and 25 and would like to invite you to join us on any and all of the days to share your expertise in teaching financial planning lessons to area Mason County elementary students. We have been working with West Shore ESD to develop a K2C financial planning curriculum. The lessons and activities are hands-on and fun and will build on knowledge gained from one grade level to the next, year to year. Each lesson is approximately 15-20 minutes long. We plan to host a volunteer orientation before deposit days to review the lessons and schedule. The deposit day dates, times, and locations are shared below. We would love to have you join us for this fun and exciting event! If you are interested, please reach out to Becky Bruett, the KickStart to Career Coordinator at bbruett@cffmc.org or 810-252-0607.  We hope you are able to join us to help students plan for their future!
